Why does the battery have to be a Duracell? We recommend Duracell batteries for OneTouch Basic (original), OneTouch II and OneTouch II Hospital Meters because they give the best performance. Several years ago, many battery formulations were changed to eliminate mercury for environmental reasons. The elimination of mercury affected battery performance. Duracell worked closely with LifeScan to re-formulate the new non-mercury battery for optimal performance with OneTouch® Systems. Duracell batteries are manufactured with a welded internal construction and provide long service life at continuous high-drain discharge, which results in enhanced reliability and better shock-resistance in comparison with pressure-type contact construction. Batteries with the pressure-type contact construction have been shown to exhibit higher incidence of error messages with OneTouch Brand Meters. The end user also benefits from a long shelf life. Ninety-three to 98 percent of capacity is to be expected from Duracell batteries after one year of storage at room temperature. Duracell batteries are also available worldwide with consistent manufacture.

Blinking Display Why is my meter display blinking / flickering? When any message flashes continually, it means the battery is getting low. Test results will still be accurate, but replace the battery as soon as possible.

Check Strip How can I make sure my meter is working properly? There are two ways to make sure your OneTouch Basic, OneTouch Profile, or OneTouch II system is working properly. The Check Strip is used to check that the meter is operating properly. For all meters, OneTouch® Normal Control Solution is also used to check that both the meter and the test strips are working together as a system, and that you are doing the test correctly. It is very important that you do these simple checks routinely to continue to get accurate results.

What is a Check Strip and where is it located? The Check Strip is used to make sure your meter is working properly. For OneTouch II, OneTouch Basic, and OneTouch Profile Meters, a purple and white Check Strip is included with your meter, usually in the meter's carrying case. Other OneTouch Meters feature automatic internal diagnostics and do not require a Check Strip.

How do I perform a Check Strip test? For OneTouch II, OneTouch Basic, and OneTouch Profile Meter users only:
- Step 1: Press the ON/OFF button. Insert Side 1 of the Check Strip.
- Step 2: When "APPLY SAMPLE" appears, remove the Check Strip.
- Step 3: When "INSERT SIDE 2" appears, turn the Check Strip over and reinsert.
The display will show "(check mark) OK" and the number, if your result falls within the correct Check Strip range printed on the back of your meter. If the reading is not within the recommended range, the meter will display "(check mark) NOT OK REDO (check mark)". This error message will appear before each test until a Check Strip test is performed in range.
Caution: If your Check Strip result is out of range, your meter may not be working properly. Do not test your blood until you get a Check Strip reading that is within the correct range printed on the back of the meter.

Cleaning What does it mean when my meter displays a "CLEAN TEST AREA" message?
- There is dirt, blood, or lint on the test area.
- Your hand or an object covered the test area while the meter was activated.
- The test strip was inserted before "INSERT STRIP" appeared on the display.
- The test area may be damaged if alcohol was used to clean the meter.
Clean the test area and repeat the blood glucose test, keeping test area clear of obstructions. If alcohol was used to clean the meter, or if the "CLEAN TEST AREA" message continues, call your local LifeScan Customer Services (in the U.S.: 800 227-8862) for assistance.

When should I clean my meter and what should I use to clean it? The meter and test strip holder should be cleaned once a week, whenever the test area looks dirty and whenever "CLEAN TEST AREA" appears on the display.
Meter Cleaning Procedure:
- Remove the test strip holder from the meter.
- Clean the test strip holder with mild soap and water. Do NOT clean with alcohol, glass cleaners, cleansers with ammonia or phenol, or abrasive cleaners. Do not immerse the meter in water.
- Use a slightly moistened cotton swab to remove any dirt or blood from the test strip holder. Also use the slightly moistened cotton swab or a soft dampened cloth to clean the test area. Do not apply full-strength detergent to the test area. Be careful not to scratch the test area.
- Dry test strip holder and test area with soft, dry cloth or tissue that does not contain lint, lotion or perfume.
- Replace the test strip holder.

Coding the Meter Why do test strips have different codes? When the test strip membrane is manufactured, the material is run through a chemical bath. Absorption of the chemical is not completely uniform. Each membrane group is tested and coded according to the exact level of chemicals it contains. Coding the meter to match the test strip is necessary to obtain accurate test results.

How do I change the code on my OneTouch Meter? Step 1: Press the ON/OFF button to turn the meter on. "CODE" and a number (i.e. CODE 7) appears on the display for several seconds. The code numbers on the OneTouch® Test Strip packages range from 1 to 16. If the number on the meter display matches the code number on your test strip package, you may proceed with a blood test. If it is not the same, go on to Step 2.
Step 2: Press the C Button. With CODE 7 (example) on the display, press and release the C Button, and the number will increase by one. Continue pressing until the number on the display matches the code number on your Test Strip package. The meter is now properly coded and you may proceed with the test. From now on, the meter will retain the selected code until you change the code for a new package of test strips.

Control Solution What is control solution and where can I get it? What does it mean when my OneTouch Profile, OneTouch Basic, or OneTouch II Meter displays "C (a number) CONTRL"? OneTouch II, OneTouch Basic, and OneTouch Profile Meters can distinguish between blood and control solution tests. If you are performing a control solution test, the meter will identify the test. If the "C (a number) CONTRL" message appears after a blood test, your blood sample was too small, smeared, or another drop was added after the test began. Repeat the test with a new test strip and a larger drop of blood.

Return to the OneTouch Profile, OneTouch Basic, and OneTouch II System FAQs
Where can I find the control solution range? The acceptable range for Normal Control Solution is marked on the test strip package. This range is for the Control Solution only; it is not a recommended range for your blood glucose test results.
Note: The Control Solution range is shown in two different units of measure--mg/dL and mmol/L, for use in different countries.

Return to the OneTouch Profile, OneTouch Basic, and OneTouch II System FAQs
Error Messages "INSERT STRIP" Error Message Why does my meter keep prompting "INSERT STRIP" even though a strip, with blood, was inserted? It is important that the OneTouch Test Strip only be inserted after the meter prompts you to insert it. Once the strip is inserted and the meter prompts you to "APPLY SAMPLE", you may then apply the blood sample. The meter will not read a sample that was placed on the strip before the strip was inserted into the meter.

Return to the OneTouch Profile, OneTouch Basic, and OneTouch II System FAQs
"NOT OK" Error Message My meter prompts "NOT OK" at the end of a blood test. Why?
- Meter may have been moved while applying blood. Repeat test.
- If you repeat the test and the error message persists, your meter may have an electronic problem. Call your local LifeScan Customer Services (in the U.S.: 800 227-8862) for assistance.

Return to the OneTouch Profile, OneTouch Basic, and OneTouch II System FAQs
"RE DO" Error Message What does "RE DO (check mark)" mean? The Check Strip test result is outside the acceptable range (the range is located on the back of the meter). Repeat the Check Strip test. Clean the meter and Check Strip if necessary. If the error message persists, call your local LifeScan Customer Services (in the U.S.: 800 227-8862) for assistance.
Caution: If your Check Strip result is out of range, your meter may not be working properly. Do not test your blood until you get a Check Strip reading that is within the correct range printed on the back of the meter.
