People with diabetes who do not control their blood glucose have more infections and a more difficult time fighting them. Uncontrolled high blood glucose slows healing, interferes with infection-fighting white blood cells and encourages the growth of bacteria.
- The most common infections involve the skin, kidney, bladder, vaginal area, lungs (bronchitis and pneumonia) and gums.
- The best prevention is to maintain good control of blood glucose levels.
