Diabetes is a chronic illness; so dealing with daily issues for weeks, months and years has the potential to be overwhelming. It's understandable to feel frustrated, upset or discouraged at times. Please know that you are not alone, that there are communities of support and encouragement, and that research has provided more and better treatments for the various diabetes complications. People with diabetes are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. And you can, too.
Short-Term Concerns Although diabetes can cause complications over time, short-term complications arise daily and can be serious if you don't know how to treat them. Issues include hypoglycemia (low blood glucose), hyperglycemia (high blood glucose) and ketones.
Long-Term Complications The longer someone lives with diabetes, and if diabetes is uncontrolled for a long time, the greater the chance of developing permanent, long-term problems. Most complications can be delayed or prevented with a balanced diabetes care routine.
