A Letter To LifeScan Customers:
--IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE USE OF OneTouch® SURESTEP® Pro TEST STRIPS--

If your institution uses the SureStep®Pro, SureStep®Flexx or SureStep® Hospital Blood Glucose Monitoring System and therefore uses SureStep®Pro Test Strips, please read the following important instructional information regarding the correct use of these test strips.

Various Conditions May Cause The Meter To Produce A Very Low Test Result (20 mg/dL / 1.0 mmol/L or less)

If the patient has symptoms of low blood glucose, follow your standard procedure for this condition. You should also consider confirming the patient's blood glucose level by an alternate method (i.e. lab test).

If the patient does not have symptoms of low blood glucose, remove the test strip from the meter and look at the confirmation dot on the back of the test strip. You should do one of the following depending on the color of the confirmation dot on the test strip:

If the confirmation dot is not completely blue or has white patches or white streaks (see the "Apply Blood Sample To The Test Strip" section of your Meter's Operators Guide), repeat the test with a new test strip. If the problem continues, contact LifeScan to determine if there is a problem with the test strips or with the way the system is being used.

If the confirmation dot is completely blue: compare the confirmation dot to the sample color dots on the Color Chart of the test strip label on the bottle. If this comparison indicates that the patient's blood glucose is very low, repeat the patient test. If the patient's blood glucose continues to be very low on the meter display, run a high and low Control Solution Test. See the "Quality Control Test" section of the Meter's Operators Guide for more information. If the Control Solution test results indicate that the meter and test strips are working together properly, the low glucose result is likely to be correct and you should follow your standard procedure for this condition. You should also consider confirming the patient's blood glucose level by an alternate method (i.e. lab test). If one or more of the Control Solution tests are out of range, contact LifeScan.

Understanding The Potential Causes Of Very Low Test Results
Like most meters, SureStepPro, SureStepFlexx and SureStep Hospital systems display specific error messages when they detect a problem with their internal functions, the test strip, or the testing procedure. However, meters cannot detect all problems. For example, certain conditions may sometimes produce a very low test result (20 mg/dL / 1.0 mmol/L or less) instead of an error message. These conditions may include any one or more of the following:

  • Not enough blood was applied to the test strip.
  • Blood was incorrectly applied to the test strip.
  • The test strip was expired.
  • The test strip bottle was improperly stored or left open, exposing the test strips to heat or moisture.
  • The test strip was defective.

Please keep these factors in mind if you receive a very low test result. We recommend that you keep this letter with your Meter's Owners Booklet for future reference.
