A Letter To LifeScan Customers:
--IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE USE OF OneTouch® SURESTEP® TEST STRIPS--
If you use, recommend or sell OneTouch® SureStep® Blood Glucose Meters and Test Strips, please read the following important instructional information regarding the correct use of these test strips.
Various Conditions May Cause The Meter To Produce A Very Low Test Result (20 mg/dL / 1.0 mmol/L or less)
If your meter displays a very low blood glucose test result (20 mg/dL / 1.0 mmol/L or less) you should do one of the following, depending on whether or not you are experiencing symptoms of very low blood glucose:
If you have symptoms of low blood glucose, follow the instructions of your healthcare professional for treating low glucose levels.
If you do not have symptoms of low blood glucose, remove the test strip from the meter and look at the confirmation dot on the back of the test strip. You should do one of the following depending on the color of the confirmation dot on the test strip:
If the confirmation dot is not completely blue or has white patches or white streaks (see the "How To Test Your Blood" section of your Owner's Booklet), repeat the test with a new test strip. If the problem continues, contact LifeScan to determine if there is a problem with the test strips or with the way you are using the system.
If the confirmation dot is completely blue: compare the confirmation dot to the sample color dots on the Color Chart of the test strip label on the bottle. If this comparison indicates that your blood glucose is very low, conduct a Control Solution Test (see the "Checking The System" section of your Owner's Booklet). If the Control Solution test indicates that your meter and test strips are working together properly, repeat your blood glucose test with a new test strip. If you continue to receive a very low blood glucose test result, the low glucose result is likely to be correct and you should follow your healthcare professional's instructions for treating low glucose levels. If the Control Solution test is out of range, contact LifeScan.
Understanding The Potential Causes Of Very Low Test Results Like most meters, the OneTouch SureStep displays specific error messages when it detects a problem with its internal functions, the test strip, or the testing procedure. However, the meter cannot detect all problems at all times. For example, certain conditions may sometimes produce a very low test result (20 mg/dL / 1.0 mmol/L or less) instead of an error message. These conditions may include any one or more of the following:
- Not enough blood was applied to the test strip.
- Blood was incorrectly applied to the test strip.
- The test strip was expired.
- The test strip bottle was improperly stored or left open, exposing the test strips to heat or moisture.
- The test strip was defective.
Please keep these factors in mind if you receive a very low test result. We recommend that you keep this letter with your Meter's Owners Booklet for future reference.
